Shivanasamudra - Barachukki falls on Cauvery

Barachukki Falls is situated along the Cauvery(also known as Kaveri) river in the island town of Shivanasamudra. Shivanasamudra literally means Shiva’s Sea. Shivanasamudra divides the Cauvery river into twin waterfalls of Barachukki and Gaganachukki.

The area near the waterfalls is famous for being the location of Asia’s first hydro-electric power station that was set up in the year 1902 and is still functional.

Barachukki Falls is a cluster of half dozen falls. This waterfalls falls into a type commonly referred to as a segmented waterfall where the water flow is broken into two or more channels before dropping over a cliff, resulting in multiple side by side waterfalls. During monsoons, it gushes with water and even during the off season, the breathtaking green landscape adorn these falls.

Barachukki waterfalls is smaller in height but wider in section and tumbles down a height of 250 feet. You can climb down(seasonal) the 350 steps to reach the base of the waterfalls. As you descend down, you can enjoy the beautiful falls dropping on the sides.

Descending and ascending the steps is a small workout in itself. And the views from the bottom gives a different view of the falls.

You can also go on a coracle boat ride(seasonal) at the base of the falls.

A coracle is a round boat that looks like an inverted coconut shell and is the only boat form used on the Cauvery river which is known for its rough waters and whirlpools. It is made out of bamboo and animal hide known for its toughness and widely used in these waters.

The rides do not cost much and they normally take in rides for a party of 4-6. The coracle ride takes you close to the waterfall and gets you drenched.

The entire terrain around the waterfall is extremely green all round the year and a visual treat to the eye.

They have some local stalls with amazing fresh fish caught from the river and the stalls will prepare seasoned fish with your choice of spiciness on hot tawa.

Transportation and logistics.

Located off the Bangalore Kollegal National Highway with one way distance of around 140 km(~ 3 hours) from Bangalore, 70 km(~ 1 hr 30 min) from Mysore.

  • Both the falls close around 5:30 pm, and weekends are quite rush
  • Falls have a parking lot and has a vehicle entrance fee
