Gas works Park, Seattle

Gas works Park, Seattle

Gas Works Park is a unique landmark for the City of Seattle.

Seattle Gasworks Sunset

Regarding some history and introduction about the park, Paul Goldberger wrote in the New York Times that “Seattle is about to have one of the nation’s most advanced pieces of urban landscape design. The complex array of towers, tanks and pipes of the gas works forms a powerful industrial still life … serving both as a visual focus for the park and as a monument to the city’s industrial past. The park represents a complete reversal from a period when industrial monuments were regarded, even by preservationists, as ugly intrusions on the landscape, to a time when such structures as the gas works are recognized for their potential ability to enhance the urban experience.” (NY Times, 8/30/75).

Seattle Gasworks installation remains

Seattle’s most popular park was once a coal-burning gas refinery. Twenty acres acquired by the city in 1962 and transformed by landscape architect Richard Haag. Twenty-five percent of the original refinery structure was preserved as industrial sculpture.

Seattle Gasworks Hill

This park should be in one of your list of things to do in Seattle. A park with great views and if you climb the little hill, you can see the whole Seattle Skyline from a different viewpoint. You can watch sea planes take off and land; enjoy paddle boarders, kayakers and boats just sailing across. If you like great views of the city, this is a must visit place.

Burrough mountain trail offers spectacular view of Mt Rainier and Emmons Glacier. We do make sure to get couple of trails in the Mt Rainier area every year, and we like to share our pictures and memories from each of our hikes. This one is from a summer starter hike in July couple of days after the road opened till Sunrise visitor center. Snow had almost melted but please check the trail conditions with rangers before heading out. We had to use our microspikes to cross some steep snowfields while crossing the mountain slopes. Something like the Kahtoola MICROspikes Footwear Traction are essential for trails like these.

During our eurotrip, we took train from Amsterdam to Brussels and decided to spend half a day to explore Brussels before heading out to Paris. We had to stash our big luggage bags at some location in the train station before heading out to explore Brussels. We did lose some time trying to figure out the lockers and onward train to Brussels Central etc, so this information would be beneficial for other fellow travellers.
